The incident took place in Hampden County around 10:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, when members of the Springfield Police Department's Firearms Investigation Unit seized two ghost guns and arrested 18-year-old Kenney Menendez.

Detectives in the unit had been conducting an illegal firearms investigation for the past several weeks with Menendez as the suspect, police said.

On Tuesday while detectives were conducting surveillance of his Springfield home on Westford Circle, Menendez got in a car and was driven away.

The car stopped at the intersection of State and Andrew streets and Menendez got out of the car.

Detectives then detained Menendez and three other occupants of the car.

Detectives recovered a ghost gun from Menendez's hoodie pocket, police said.

Police also recovered a loaded ghost gun with a 29 round magazine inside the car, police said.

Menendez was placed under arrest. The other occupants were released.

Menendez, of Springfield, was charged with:

  • Carrying a firearm without a license (2 counts)
  • Carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way
  • Improper storage of a large capacity firearm
